Viola Katherine Smith, 91, of Urbana, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Urbana, by the Rev. Ardel Barta. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the church where a vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday. Burial: St. Mary's Spencer's Grove Cemetery. Arrangements made by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point.
Viola is survived by her children, Steven (Angie) Smith of Center Point, Cheryl (Darrel) Lippert of Tucson, Ariz., and Douglas Smith of Center Point; grandchildren, Marty Smith of Center Point, Marcy (Nate) Johnson of Center Point, Marc (Sarah) Smith of Urbana, Dustin (Marina) Lippert of Tucson, Brandon Lippert of Tucson and Devin Smith of Center Point; and great-grandchildren, Channing Smith, Landon Smith, Zackary Johnson, Charleigh Smith, Gabriel Johnson and Sawyer Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Smith, in 1999; brothers, Ronald, Melvin and Lester Fritz; sister, Berneice Duello; and parents, Anna (Ockenfels) Fritz and Albert Fritz.
Viola was born on July 12, 1924, in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Ockenfels) Fritz. She married Paul Smith on May 13, 1947, in Watkins, Iowa. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Urbana, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed volunteering at Hospice of Mercy, St. Mary's Catholic Church, MHI and the Center Point-Urbana Schools. Viola also enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing cards, spending time with family, watching NASCAR and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
