Viola Marie Stanlake was born July 6, 1915, to Elmer and Caroline Proesch Stanlake near Lowden, Iowa. She attended schools in the Lowden, Wheatland and Durant areas.
On Aug. 16, 1938, she married Charles Arthur DeWulf. The couple farmed in the Clarence and Lowden areas from 1938 to 1947. In November 1942, Charles lost his hands in a corn picker accident and in January 1946, the couple lost all of their possessions in a house fire. Neighbors housed the young couple and their son, Darrell, and built them a garage in which they resided until March 1947, when they purchased a farm and moved to rural Bennett. While residing in the garage, the couple also welcomed a daughter, Sharon. In 1971, Viola and her husband retired from farming and moved to their new home in Bennett.
Viola loved playing cards, dancing with Charles, and traveling the United States with Charles and their son, Darrell and his family, in Darrell's motor home. They also enjoyed attending their grandkids' school activities.
Viola was a devoted wife to Charles, working beside him and providing his personal care until his death in October 2012. Following his death, she relocated to Durant and she spent the final years of her life at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kleppe, Bennett; daughter-in-law, Lynet DeWulf, Bennett; five grandchildren, Del (Amy) DeWulf, Bennett, Jill (Don) Wojciechowski, Marion, Jason (Amanda) Kleppe, Tipton, Jacqueline (Jared) Williams, Iowa City, and Dawn (Jon) Hess, Lowden.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles; her son, Darrell; son-in-law, Loren Kleppe; parents, Elmer and Caroline Stanlake; sister, Dorothy Sherwin; and brother, Richard Stanlake.
