VERNON ZACH

Vernon J. Zach, 91, of Swisher, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at First Presbyterian Church near Ely, located at 11100 Spanish Rd. Private family burial will be in Dupont Cemetery near Swisher. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
Vernon was born April 3, 1923, on the family farm near Swisher, the son of Joseph and Ella (Bistricky) Zach. He married Martha Dvorak on Oct. 3, 1945, at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Vernon and Martha farmed near Swisher.
Vernon enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, playing cards, traveling to Arizona and Texas, as well as spending time with his family.
Vernon is survived by his wife of over 69 years, Martha; sons, Larry (Marcia) Zach of Ankeny and Allen Zach of Swisher; four grandchildren, Chris Zach, April Zach (Barry Ford), Joshua Zach and Jenna Zach; one great-grandson, Beckett Ford; and his sister, Gladys Mattson of Montana.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ernest Zach.
