Vernon Weers, 88, died Saturday, April 19, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospice Care surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the First Congregational Church, Anamosa, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Pastor Greg Griffin will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 9 until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa.

Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Enid; three sons, Gary (Joanne), Anamosa, Stuart (Bleva), Boone, and Jerry John (Sara), Houston, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Julie Weers, Anamosa; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and three siblings, Margaret Ann Siebels and Gloria Byrne and Lorance Weers, all of Anamosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis; and two sisters, Jeanette Shields and Lorna Templeton.
Vernon John Weers was born Oct. 9, 1925, at Anamosa, Iowa. He was the son of John and Hanna Cordes Weers. Vernon graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools in 1944. He then started farming. Vernon married Enid Gilmore on March 22, 1945, at the First Congregational Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed until 1987. Vernon then helped his son, Dennis on his farm.
Vernon had a private pilots license and owned his own plane for several years. He enjoyed attending fly-in breakfasts all over Eastern Iowa. In retirement, he enjoyed square dancing with Enid, wood working, playing cards and spending time with family.
