Vernon Lorraine Shedek, 99, of Oxford Junction, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Clarence Nursing Home. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, at Lahey Funeral Home in Oxford Junction. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held at Mayflower Cemetery in Oxford Junction with military rites.
Vernon was born June 27, 1917, to Louis and Albina (Koranda) Shedek, in Iowa. He graduated from Oxford Junction High School in 1934. He married Marion Jorgenson on Aug. 5, 1939, in Monticello. He faithfully and honorably served in the U.S. Navy for three years. Vernon worked as a carpenter. He was a man of many trades.
Vernon was a member of Wapsie Post 473 of the American Legion in Oxford Junction for over 70 years and was a volunteer fireman for many years. Vernon was a former member of the senior center board, library board and the senior housing board. He always had a big garden and gave produce away to anyone who wanted some.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children, Barbara "Sis" (Gerald) Brauer of Oxford Junction, Gary "Butch" Shedek of Cedar Rapids, Charles (Pat) Shedek of Robins and Wendy (Andy) Nowachek of Overland, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Virginia; son, Lester; daughter, Gerre Zaruba; and two granddaughters.
Memorials may be directed to his family in his honor.
