Vernon Leon Hagen, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, at Windsor Manor in Vinton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., in Vinton with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery in Newhall. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Cards or memorials may be forwarded to Mike Hagen, P.O. Vernon was born April 13, 1935, in Fairfax, the son of Arthur and Elda (Gefaller) Hagen. As a child, Vern lived in Newhall, Van Horne, and finally Garrison. He attended school in Newhall until finding work with a local Garrison farmer. He met Pearl Nissen and they were married on Nov. 6, 1955, at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone.
The couple farmed and lived south of Keystone, until buying a farm four miles west of Keystone. In 1968, Vern continued to farm and went to work at the Keystone Mercantile. He continued to farm and work in Keystone until selling the farm in 1995 and moving to Newhall. He retired from the Mercantile in 1997. Vern and Pearl enjoyed family camping and fishing trips and traveling to Branson for country music shows. They loved their grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their school events. Pearl and Vern moved to Windsor Manor in Vinton in November of 2018. Pearl passed away on Feb. 17, 2021, exactly two years ago.
He is survived by his children, Mike (Vicki) Hagen of Newhall, Pam (Kevin) Becker of Atkins, Scott (Shelly) Hagen of Watkins and Todd (Jacqueline) Hagen of Shellsburg; 10 grandchildren, Brian and Darren (Moriah) Hagen, Lisa (William) Jump, Mindi (Paul) Dayton and Jerad (Lindsey) Becker, Kristina (Tyler) Russell, Drew (Stephanie) Hagen and Anna Hagen, Wyatt and Noah (Rachel) Hagen; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale (Karen) Hagen of Vinton and Lyle (Donna) Hagen of Lebanon, Mo.; sister, Jeannine Schminke of Shellsburg; and sister-in-law, Ilene Hagen of Knoxville.
In addition to his parents and wife Pearl, Vern was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jennifer Hagen; brother, Harold Hagen; and his brother-in-law, Marion Schminke.
