Verne Allen Long, 93, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Verne Allen Long was
born June 3, 1925, the son of Arthur and Anna (Unash) Long. Verne was united in marriage to Katherine "Kay" Rick. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as radar man 3rd class and served on the ship Bandara from 1943 to 1946. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and trout fishing. Verne also was a master gardener, and loved traveling with his wife, Kay, all over the world. He retired from Penford and, most of all, loved his dogs and birds.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Kay, in 2003.
Left to cherish Verne's memories are his sister, Pat A. Hartle of Hiawatha; surrogate daughter, Lesta (Kenny Robertson) Sarazin; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha in his name.
