Verne Dale Svec passed away on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy surrounded by family. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at Brosh Chapel. Burial will follow at the Czech National Cemetery, followed by a lunch at The Avacentre at Brosh Chapel.
Verne was born Dec. 2, 1941, to Louis and Barbara (Pospisil) Svec in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended a one room schoolhouse (LaBelle #7) through sixth grade and graduated from Prairie High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart Virginia Wilson on Feb 10, 1962, and they had two sons, Raymond (Ray) and Robert (Bob). Verne worked several years farming with Crutchley Farms Inc., drove truck for Vigortone Ag Products, worked at Kirkwood Community College and, after retirement, drove shuttle for Toyota of Cedar Rapids part-time.
He enjoyed a good game of cards, square dancing, clogging, old time music, coffee with the guys in Ely and tractor rides with his sons and friends, and most of all, enjoyed being with his family. Verne was a member of the Two Cylinder Club and First Presbyterian Church near Ely.
Verne is survived by his wife, Virginia; son, Ray (Dawn) Svec from Urbandale and daughter-in-law Jeree Svec from New Hampton; grandchildren, Ashley (Ryan) Kuker, Donny Felgate, Julie (Zach) Swigart, Nathan (Hannah) Svec, Nicholas (JC) Svec and Trevor Svec; great-grandchildren, Trevor Felgate, Keaton Swigart, Caden Kuker, Chase Wagner, Ryder Kuker, Tyson Kuker, Landon Swigart, Rori Fitro and Maycen Svec; his brother, Melvin (Jody) Svec of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, LouEllen Svec of Solon; brother-in-law, Daryl Gladwin of Cedar Rapids; and several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert, parents, Louis and Barbara Svec; brother, Arnold Svec: sister, Diane Gladwin; brother-in-law, Wilbur Wilson; mother-in-law and father-in-law, LaVern and Gladys Wilson; and a niece, Julie Svec.
Memorials for Verne may be directed to First Presbyterian Church near Ely, Building Fund or to Hospice of Mercy.
