Vernard “Vernie” D. Almandinger Jr., 81, of Center Point, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with a celebration of life at 11 a.m. and luncheon immediately following on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at Anchor Bible Church (formerly Center Point United Methodist Church), 275 Green Street W in Center Point, Iowa.
Vernie was born Oct. 19, 1940, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Helen (Bryant) and Vernard D. Almandinger Sr. He graduated from Muscatine High
School and went on to obtain his master’s degree in school administration from the University of Northern Iowa. He was united in marriage to Carma Krider on June 16, 1963, in Muscatine, Iowa.
Vernie taught and coached for three years at Hedrick, Iowa, 10 years in Leon, Iowa, and ended his teaching and coaching career in Victor, Iowa, at HLV High School, where he also enjoyed many years of announcing football. He loved social studies and taught all of them. His photogenic memory could take him anywhere. He was a long-time member of Center Point Garden Club and his favorite was growing vegetables and achieving bumper crops. He was a voracious reader of all books, but his favorite was Louie L’amour. He loved music and could often be found dancing to his favorites with his wife Carma. Vernie not only participated in sports in his earlier days (marbles, baseball, swimming, bowling, golfing, fast pitch softball, golf, etc.), coached his entire career, but simply loved sports of all kinds. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, fished as much as possible, valued his many years pheasant hunting, excelled at cards/games, was known for always having a joke to share (Vern Jokes or Vernisms), and his family was his passion.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Carma Almandinger of Center Point; children, Doug (Gen) Almandinger of Marion, Iowa, Pam (Todd) McCombs of Russell, Iowa, and Cindy (James) Jensen of Palo, Iowa; brother, Ron (Shirley) Almandinger of Carterville, MO.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Vernard Almandinger Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Anchor Bible Church Men’s Group (Bulldog’s) to be used to help others in need.
