Verna B. Scott-Riis, 93,
of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diane Townsley and the Rev. Diane Vorhies presiding. Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at the church. Graveside at 1:30 p.m. at I.O.O.F. Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Verna was born July 13, 1924, in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Verna (Mercer) Walter. Verna married Francis E. Scott on June 5, 1945, at her parents' home in Deep River. Francis passed in 1974. Verna taught school in Poweshiek County. On May 14, 1977, she married Martin Riis at the Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member for more than 60 years. Verna worked for Collins Radio, retiring after 28 years. She was an avid golfer. She began playing in her 60s. Verna accomplished three holes-in-one, one of which was at the Jones Park Golf Course. She was a part of three different golf leagues until she was 85. Verna also loved gardening and traveling.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Louise (Leon) Gorsch of Davis, Ill.; stepdaughters, Marta (Michael) Klavon of Cedar Rapids and Marilyn Stone of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Lon (Rebecca) Gorsch of Roscoe, Ill., Larry (Michelle) Gorsch of South Lyon, Mich., Jayson Scott of Williams and Cara Lynn Scott of Covington; two stepgrandchildren, Jennifer and Kate Klavon; six great-grandchildren, Talyn, Kelsey, Emily, Jeffrey, Lily and Amy; and daughter-in-law, Cheryll Scott of Covington.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Francis and Martin; son, Lynn Scott; and siblings, Margaret, Irene and Robert.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church in Verna's memory.
