VERNA M. LUCAS
Cedar Rapids
Verna M. Lucas, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Rev. Phil Thompson will officiate. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. By Verna's wishes, the family will receive friends and family beginning a 9 a.m. Friday at the gathering space at St. Pius.
Verna was born June 27, 1927, in Luxemburg, Iowa, on the family farm as the daughter of Mathias and Bertha (Oberbroeckling) Maiers. She married Ray M. Lucas on Sept. 7, 1949, in Luxemburg. They farmed in Holy Cross on the Lucas homestead until 1958, then they moved to Cedar Rapids.
Spending time with her family was her greatest joy. She chose to open a home day care in 1968 and retired in 1988.
She was a member of the Ladies' Guild, where she made many lifelong friends. Verna and Ray volunteered many hours at St. Pius in its early days. They also enjoyed volunteering at the Knights of Columbus in Marion, especially for the fish fries, where Verna was known as "the pie lady."
She enjoyed baking, bowling and a good game of cards. She had a good life but, to her family, not long enough. She will be greatly missed and forever will be in our hearts.
Verna is survived by her three children, Lynn (Dan) Pilkenton, Beth Schafer and Don (Beth) Lucas; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Merle (Verna) Maiers; three sisters, Eldora Pins, Julie Ungs and Pat Elliott; and sisters-in-law, Grace Maiers and Shirley McCloy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; son, David; four brothers, Jerome (Bennie) Maiers, Ralph Maiers, Jake (Norma) Maiers and John (Frannie) Maiers; and brothers-in-law, Ed Ungs, Schim Elliott, Matt Pfeiler and Paul Pins.
Memorials can be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 5390 of Marion and the Donna & Dennis Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
