Verna Mae Diers, 84, of New Vienna, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Kramer Funeral Home (750 12th Ave. SW), Dyersville, where a vigil service will be at 9:30 a.m. Visitation also will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. before the funeral mass Monday at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colesburg, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery. The Rev. Al Vorwald will officiate.
Verna Mae was born Jan. 9, 1930, in New Vienna, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Leona (Rolfes) VonHandorf. She married James Diers Sr. on Oct. 4, 1950, in Colesburg. Together they farmed near Colesburg on the home farm.
Survivors include her three children, James (Janet) Diers Jr., Robert (Debra) Diers and Kay (Jim) Jones, all of Colesburg; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Mitch) Kirby, Jason Diers, Jared (Amanda) Diers, Heidi Diers, Amanda Diers, Jake Jones and Ike Jones; six great-grand-children; siblings, Lou Ann (Kenneth) Brown, Donald (Jean) VonHandorf, Lester (Nancy) VonHandorf, all of Colesburg, and Marilyn (Roger) Schrunk of El Toro, Calif.; in-laws, Jeanette (Conrad) Tegeler of Manchester, Jerry Ellerbach of Holy Cross and Eunice Diers of Colesburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James in 2013; and in-laws, Alice (Edward) Rausch, Joan Ellerbach, Anna Mae (Edmund) Steffen and Paul Diers.
