Verlyn D. "Bud" Beck, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at his home. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4. Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean (Jean); a daughter, Cynthia (Bruce) LaMotte of Chicago; a son, Gary (Nadia) of Reno, Nev.; and a sister, Marilyn Adams of Delhi. He also is survived by two grandchildren, Christina (Donald) LaMotte-Sorota and Tatiana (Glenn) Coleman; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Mayerle, Makena Sorota and Bennjamin Coleman.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Ray, Robert and Donald; and a granddaughter, Renee Mayerle.
Bud was born April 13, 1926, on a farm near Olin, Iowa, the son of Edward S. and Bertha Baughman Beck. He graduated from Springville High School. Bud enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy Amphibious Asiatic Pacific Campaign in the Philippines on a LCT during World War II. He married Mary Jean Ward on Oct. 15, 1949, in Marion. Bud was parts manager at International Harvester Trucks and later Hawkeye International for 42 years, retiring in 1991.
Bud was a member of the American Legion,VFW and Ostomy Group. He was a volunteer for Mercy Medical Center, American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association and the Veterans Clinic of Cedar Rapids.
The family would like to thank Mercy Medical Center, Veterans Clinic, Hall-Perrine Center, Hospice of Mercy and all others who gave him such great care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bud's memory to the Mercy Foundation, Sisters of Mercy or the American Cancer Society.
To some, he was Verlyn, but to most, he was Pud, Bud or Mr. Beck. He will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.
