Verletta Mae McGlaughlin, 78, of Marion, formerly of Prairie Grove, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Hiawatha Care Center.
A parish vigil service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family will greet friends following the vigil service until 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by the Rev. David O'Connor. The family also will greet friends one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Verletta was born May 21, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Ella (Bohlen) Beckman. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1958 and from Wartburg College in 1963. On Dec. 26, 1966, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, Verletta was united in marriage to James "Jim" McGlaughlin. She was employed as a teacher at Mediapolis School, Cedar Rapids Community Schools and Marion Independent Schools, before retiring in 2000. Verletta was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beta Sigma Phi and card club. Teaching and the development of young minds were a passion for her. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and socializing with friends and family. Verletta was involved in various service activities, including coordinating Meals on Wheels. Her six grandchildren gave Verletta endless joy, and even when she did not know them by name, she knew they belonged to her. Verletta will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim McGlaughlin of Marion; son, Brian McGlaughlin of Marion; daughters, Diane (Daniel) Mangrich of Marion and Christine (Nick) Shaw of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Shawn Mangrich of Marion, Frankie McGlaughlin of Cedar Falls, Aiden Mangrich of Marion, Ella Shaw of Cedar Rapids, Tara Mangrich of Marion and Nina Shaw of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Robert (Marlene) Beckman of Mediapolis, Iowa, Jim (Donna) Beckman of Danville, Iowa, Don Beckman of Danville, Rodney (Naomi) Beckman of Stockport, Iowa, Joyce Beckman of Danville, and Jeanie (Tom) Gerdes of Danville; sister-in-law, RoseAlice Beckman of Bloomville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Verletta was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Ella Beckman; brother, the Rev. Richard Beckman; and sister-in-law, Barbara Beckman.
Memorials in Verletta's memory may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or the family to establish a scholarship fund in Verletta's name for the Marion Independent School District.
