VERLENE SCHUMACHER

Verlene A. Schumacher, 88, of Iowa City, formerly of Davenport, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015, at Briarwood Health Care Center. Visitation will be Saturday, April 11, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Iowa City. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the church, with the Very Rev. Rudolph T. Juarez officiating. Burial will be in Roanoke Township Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Davenport Public Library from which Verlene enjoyed reading countless books.
Verlene was born June 26, 1926, in Clarence, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Myrtle (Techau) Baute. She graduated from Maquoketa High School. Verlene was united in marriage to Harold Schumacher on May 3, 1958, in Davenport. He preceded her in death Dec. 24, 1965.
She worked for McCarthy-Busch as an office manager and was a longtime personal assistant to Gretchen McCarthy. Verlene was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Davenport and a volunteer at Genesis West. She was an avid bridge and Scrabble player. Verlene enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Verlene is survived by two children, Julie (Peter) Damiano of Iowa City and Jeff (Carla) Schumacher of Ankeny; two sisters, Mona Kleeman of Davenport and Patty Greenwood of Cascade; four grand-children, Tony and Chris Damiano and David and Brian Schumacher; and many extended family.
Verlene was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and parents.
The family would like to thank Briarwood Health Care Center and Essence of Life Hospice for its kind and compassionate care they provided.
