Verla Scheetz Greene, 100, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mount Vernon, by Pastor Sean Hansen. Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 8, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Burial: Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include her children, Craig (Diane) Scheetz and Becky Scheetz; grandchildren, Kourtney Scheetz (Jim Miller) and Kristopher (Jamie) Scheetz; four great-grandchildren; and several extended family members.
Verla was born Sept. 25, 1915, in rural Iowa County to Carl and Ruth (Cooperider) Schumacher. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1933 and taught country schools for 10 years. She graduated 31 years later from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She taught third grade for 34 years, retiring in 1981. Verla married Harold Scheetz on July 11, 1947, in Williamsburg, Iowa. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1955 and had two children. Harold passed away in 1980. She married Everett Greene on Aug. 22, 1987, in Marion.
Verla enjoyed reading, needlepoint and cross stitch, and visiting her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; brothers, Richard, Lloyd, Carl, Eldon and Donald; and husband, Everett, in 2014.
A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and Linn Manor Care Center for its loving care and kindness to Verla.
