Vera Fae Schoon, of Monticello, died March 23, 2017, from a brain hemorrhage at St. Luke's Hospice, Cedar Rapids.

Services will be held Friday, March 31, at 11 a.m.

at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, with visitation one hour before the service.

Born March 16, 1930, to Elwill Bernard Null and Augusta (Husman) Null in Monticello, Iowa, Vera was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Monticello. She attended Monticello Public Schools and graduated in 1948. Vera was described by her sisters, Betty Lou McVay and Phyllis Parrott, as "Daddy's girl" and the "spark" in life.

After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, LaVern Leroy Schoon, on June 10, 1948, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello, where she was a faithful member for nearly 70 years. They were blessed with four sons, David, Danny, Douglas and Dana Schoon.

Vera always will be remembered for her love of Christian fellowship, as well as the foods she created in her kitchen: angel food cakes, brownies, and many other culinary delights. Her brownies won her a blue ribbon at the Jones County Fair and the admiration of many. Her angel food cakes were delightful, light creations that only she knew how to make.

Vera never missed a sporting event that her sons participated in, encouraging them in athletics, and exceedingly proud of their many academic and musical accomplishments. She was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved going to football games as long as her health allowed.

She and LaVern spent many happy years camping at various locations throughout the United States with friends and family. Vera was one of those rare people who was lucky at cards and yet never boasted about her prowess. She loved bowling and golfing with friends.

Most of all, she had a kind heart and always had a positive attitude about life and was never afraid to try new adventures, including jumping out of an airplane at 80 years of age. She had a skill for finding a way to win the hearts of anyone she met by her interest in them, whoever they were.

Left to cherish her memory are four sons, Dave (Penny) Schoon, Dan (Deb) Schoon and Dana Schoon, all of Monticello, and Doug (Sarah) Schoon of Coralville; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Vera's wishes were to have her body donated to the University of Iowa for research.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, or the Monticello Heritage Center.
