Vera Kathryn Gingerich, 93, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Oct. 28, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, with Father Steven Witt officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Richmond.
Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice.
Vera was born in rural Richmond, Iowa, on June 28, 1923, the daughter of Lawrence and Agnes (Bopp) Duwa. She grew up south of Richmond and attended Holy Trinity School in Richmond. On Nov. 4, 1946, Vera was united in marriage to Olin Zager Gingerinch. Olin passed away Dec. 27, 1998.
Vera spent her life caring for others. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and remained active in many church-related organizations, including Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Altar and Rosary Society, Presentation Associates and the Congregation of The Humility of Mary. Vera also was very active in Al-Anon and was a longtime volunteer for Iowa City Hospice.
Being able to spend her final years in her home meant the world to Vera, which she was able to do, surrounded by her family, friends, neighbor and her beloved caregiver Aline.
Survivors include her four children, Peggy (Forrest) Dean of Phoenix, Ariz., Penny (Jay) Dean of Iowa City, David (Barb) Gingerich of Glendale, Ariz., and Patrick Gingerich of Iowa City; seven siblings, Lucille Duwa, Cleola Schneider, Delores Krotz, Irma Altenhofen, Elaine Lee, Dean Duwa and Janet Hagie; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Dale Duwa and Clifford Duwa; and a sister, Velma Waldschmidt.
