Velma Louise Powell, 91,
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on her 91st birthday, Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at West Ridge Care Center.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Gregory) Witt of Davenport; her son, Steven (Jacqueline) Powell of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Kevin (Eleanor) Witt of Iowa City, Kelly (Chris) Kingma of Davenport, Matt (Michelle) Powell of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer (Aleicer) Zerpa of Cedar Rapids, Carisa (Joseph) Byrd of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Powell of Cedar Rapids; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilfred E. Powell Jr.; and her brother, Dorman Irwin.
Velma was born Dec. 15, 1926, in Melrose, Iowa, the daughter of Oswald and Fern Irwin. She grew up in the Melrose area and attended high school in Centerville, Iowa. Velma married Wilfred Powell in Coffeyville, Kan., on Dec. 27, 1944, shortly before Wilfred went overseas as a pilot in World War II. After his return, they moved to Cedar Rapids in 1947. In 1960, Velma started work at Square D (Schneider Electric) and was employed there for 32 years until her retirement in 1992.
Velma enjoyed cooking, holiday get-togethers with family, traveling, maintaining her yard and plants, and most of all, her grandchildren.
Honoring Velma's requests, there will be no funeral or viewing arrangements. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
The family would like to thank the staff at West Ridge Care Center for the loving care shown to Velma and her family throughout her stay.
