Velma A. Childers, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died on Dec. 9, 2017, at her home. Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Graveside service: Immediately following the visitation at the Linwood Mausoleum.
Velma was born on May 4, 1930, in Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of John and Caroline (Stroh) Cohrt. She graduated from La Porte High School in 1949. On Nov. 12, 1950, she was united in marriage to Jack Childers in La Porte City. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and walking. The couple loved to travel and go dancing.
Velma is survived by her daughters, Donna (Joel) Schmitz of Urbana, Iowa, Brenda Kloos of Cedar Rapids, and Jean (Thomas) English of Branson, Mo.; five grandchildren, Aric Fett (Lori Hansen), Adam (Leta) Fett, Amy Sherrets, Larissa (Carl II) Norris-Ruffin and Edmund (Ashley) English; 13 great-grandchildren, Abby Fett, Kay Fett, Eva Fett, Cameron Sherrets, Piper Sherrets, Carl "Tre" Ruffin III, DeMarcus Ruffin, Kaya Ruffin, Carly Ruffin, Naomi Troester, Taylor Sherrets, Kaylee McCann and Aryonna Harding; and sister, Ella Potter of Keystone, Iowa.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Childers; parents, John and Caroline Cohrt; sisters, Anna Gimm, Elsie Albers, Julia Kotouc and Helen Fellmet; brothers, George "Jake" Cohrt, Fred "Fritz" Cohrt, Ernest "Ernie" Cohrt and Edward Cohrt.
