Velda Mallie, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the New Hampton Care Center following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the United Methodist Church, Martelle, with interment in
the Norwich Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. The Rev. Candraeah Carey will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are three children, Marcia (James) Duffy, Lawler, Mary (Michael) Stark, Anacortes, Wash., and Marna (Patrick) Supple, Montezuma; five grandchildren, Scott Duffy, Cedar Rapids, Jennifer (Chris) Darville, Houston, Texas, Bridgitte Duffy, Cedar Falls, Brooke (Jesse) Schmidt, Montezuma, and John Supple, Montezuma; two stepgrandchildren, Brian Stark, Fairbank, and Jamie Stark, Tucson, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Bryn and Jade Schmidt; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brody Stark, Isabelle, Sebastion and Anastasia Darville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; two sisters, Betty Ellison and Shirley Roberg; and three brothers, Robert, John and James Blythe.
Velda Ione Blythe was born June 13, 1921, in Hale, Iowa, the daughter of Levi and Crystal Blythe. Velda received her early education in the Olin Schools and graduated from the Martelle High School in 1939. On June 14, 1942, she married Edward Mallie. The couple farmed in the Martelle and Lisbon area. Following his death in 1972, Velda moved to Anamosa, where she was a cook at the Anamosa Care Center for 16 years. In 2011, Velda moved to Kensington Assisted Living in New Hampton and later to the care center.
Velda was active in the Methodist Church in Martelle, Anamosa and in New Hampton.
She enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren – going with Marcia and family for fishing at Lake Kabetogama in Minnesota, where she was known as Riley and netted the fish. She also enjoyed her tour of Ireland and Scotland with them, and the wheelchair ride up the Cliffs of Mohr. Also visiting Mary and family in Nevada and Washington state and being with Marna and family at the house on Lake Ponderosa.
She enjoyed crocheting and made over 50 afghans for family and friends. She loved to play board games and card games with her grandchildren.
