He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter, Jill (Brian) Vauthrin Brand of State Center, Iowa; a son, Jeremy Jonathan Vauthrin of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; two grandsons, Tyler Vauthrin Brand and Sean Robert Brand; a sister, Joyce Knutson of Ellsworth; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lynda and Carl Schnebbe of Belle Plaine and Wade and Jerri Allen Swindle of North Liberty, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Neil was born March 24, 1936, in rural Melbourne, Iowa, the son of Horace and Alma (Oler) Vauthrin. He graduated from Melbourne High School and Iowa State University. On August 5, 1967, he was united in marriage with Janet Iva Swindle at Silver Creek United Methodist Church, rural Ryan, Iowa.
His family was a top priority in his life. Neil especially enjoyed traveling all around the country with them. Each summer he would scout out a different national park or forest for family camping. In earlier years, Neil especially enjoyed biking and participated in several RAGBRAIs. As his health declined he found satisfaction in spending time at the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA. For many years he volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital. He had a special passion for theater and sought sites throughout the US and Canada where he could see works of Shakespeare performed. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Compass Class.
