Van Horn, Robert Winfred Jay
Robert Winfred Jay Van Horn, 88, quietly passed away Nov. 19, 2011, at Whispering Hills Care Home in Tucson, Ariz.
He was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Kenwood Park (Cedar Rapids), Iowa. He attended Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, and graduated from the University of Iowa. He raised his family in Cedar Rapids while working at Collins Radio Co. In 1959, he moved his family to Richardson, Texas, and worked at the growing Collins Radio Co. systems operations there. He retired from Rockwell International (Collins) at Richardson, Texas, in February 1983 after a long career of contributions in mechanical engineering, project engineering, airborne systems program management and business development. He received many Naval awards and recognition for work on the TACAMO system, an airborne platform for survivable, very-low frequency communication.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Benson; sons, Robert Gordon (Cedar Rapids), and Thomas Cory (Fort Worth, Texas); three stepchildren; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randall Hayes; and a wife, Audrey LaVonne.
A memorial service was held Nov. 26, 2011, at the Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 E. El Conquistador Way, Oro Valley, AZ 85804.
