Valerie Jean Anderson (Johnson), of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, gained her angel wings after a lengthy illness on January 28, 2026, passing peacefully at home surrounded by love.
Valerie was born on July 30, 1963, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Arthur and Phyllis Johnson. From the beginning, she carried a gentle strength and a generous heart that would touch countless lives.
Valerie was an amazing human—one of those rare souls who always had a kind word, thoughtful advice, and the ability to truly listen without judgment. She held her family and friends in the highest regard and had a way of making everyone feel welcome and at ease in her presence. To know Valerie was to feel seen, heard, and cared for.
She was the proud mother of Corey (Amy) Anderson of Fairfax and Caley Anderson of Shellsburg. Her greatest joy was being a mom and, later, a grandma. She adored her grandchildren Caydence, Landen, Drake, Merritt, Mara & Noah, each of whom brought immense light into her life.
Valerie is survived by her siblings Scott (Jaime) Cassatt, Nancy (Roy) Roberts, Cindy Johnson Keyes, and Tony (Carla) Johnson, along with many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Phyllis Johnson; brothers Terry and Douglas Cassatt; sister-in-law Carla Johnson; brother-in-law Derek Anderson; and nephew Troy Wardlow.
Valerie graduated from Indian Hills Community College with a degree in Computer Programming and went on to have a successful career as an audit and business analyst with MCI WorldCom and Verizon Business. Despite her professional accomplishments, she would always say her greatest achievements were being a mother and grandmother.
Affectionately known as “Mama V” to her children’s friends and “Val” to those closest to her, Valerie was known for her warmth, loyalty, and humor. One of her favorite sayings was “Fo-sho!”—a perfect reflection of her easygoing spirit and readiness to say yes to life.
Valerie loved Hawkeye football and wrestling, Minnesota Vikings football, and traveling with her longtime companion, Travis Pike. Whether it was a weekend getaway for a game or a longer escape, she cherished the adventure. She especially loved the beach—walking the shoreline in search of seashells, soaking in the peace of the ocean, and getting lost in a good book.
Valerie was a believer and a child of God. While her absence leaves an immeasurable ache, her family and friends find comfort in knowing she is now at peace.
In accordance with Valerie’s wishes, there will be no formal services at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Valerie was cremated and is home with Caley.
May her soul rest in peace, and may those who loved her carry forward her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love.
