Ungs, Robert Arthur
Robert Arthur Ungs, 80, of Readlyn, Iowa, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, Calif. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. Burial will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be held one hour before the mass Friday at the church.
Robert was born Jan. 30, 1931, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, the son of Edmund and Frances (Roethler) Ungs. He was united in marriage to Dolores Rosauer on Sept. 10, 1951. Bob worked for many years at Rath Packing in Waterloo. After moving to Readlyn in 1963, he and Dolores owned and operated two businesses over the years: Du Kum Inn and later Borderline Pizza.
He was instrumental in organizing softball teams and leagues throughout the 1970s and beyond. He loved to go fishing, especially in recent years with his grandchildren. He was an avid card player, was honored as the 1996 Readlyn Town Grump, and was a 53-year member of Knights of Columbus. Bob was also a founding member and a current board member of the Readlyn Historical Society.
Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores Ungs of Readlyn; son, Bob (Carol Lau) Ungs of Lakewood, Calif.; son, Ken (Debra Dancel) Ungs of Highland, Calif.; daughter, Mary Lou Ungs of Readlyn, Iowa; son, Kelly (Janet) Ungs of Marion, Iowa; and son, Jeff (Kelli) Ungs of Dakota City, Neb.; grandchildren, Leslie, Lauren, Ben, Kaitlin, Elijah, Isaac, Alisha, Aaron and Abraham; and one sister, Sally Carney of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Peggy (Dale) O'Neal; his brothers, Dennis (Norma), Clem (Iola) and Don (Rita); and one brother-in-law, Clair Carney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.
