Underwood, Kathryne LaVonne

Kathryne LaVonne Underwood, 82, longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

LaVonne was born in Fairfax, Iowa, on Nov. 18, 1928, to Charles and Kathryne (Buresh) Gibson. She was married to Joyce Underwood Jr. on Nov. 4, 1951, in Fairfax, Iowa. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947 and cosmetology school in 1948. LaVonne was a beautician for a number of years and was also employed at Rockwell Collins from 1966 until her retirement in 1989.

She was a member of the Elks Club women's auxiliary. LaVonne enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, camping and caring for the flowers she planted in her yard.

Survivors include two daughters, Genine (Joe) Davis of Rudd, Iowa, and Cindy (John) Pansegrau of Solon; a son, Mark (Barb) Underwood of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters; five grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren.

LaVonne was preceded by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Howard and Clarence Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northbrook Manor Care Center or the Alzheimer's Association.
