Turley, Norman Gene
Norman Gene Turley, 77, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday evening, April 12, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Deacon Jim Berger. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE. Burial will be at a later date at St. John's Cemetery.
Norm is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; children, Donald (Nora) Turley, Walford, Joe (Sheila) Turley, Cedar Rapids, Alice (Dan) Dudley, Chesapeake, Va., Laura (Gene) Kloubec, Amana, Annette (Don) Hardin, Wapello, Tina Turley, Homestead, and Eveard (Kim) Turley, Cedar Rapids; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dean Turley, Gillette, Wyo., and Bud (Freda) Turley, Mesa, Ariz.; and a sister, Sharon (Robert) Copp, Buffalo, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Burgess Flint; grandson, Norman G. Turley; his parents, Freeman and Alice Turley; and siblings, John Mahaney, Virginia Pogue, Dixie Streeter, LaDonna Fauber and Donald Turley.
Norman was born April 18, 1935, in Meeteetsee, Wyo., and had worked in the oil fields in Wyoming before his marriage. He married Joan H. Franc on Dec. 20, 1952, at St. Boniface Catholic Cathedral in San Francisco. Norm had worked as a supervisor and crane operator for E. Cohn and Sons, later Alter Inc. for 38 years before his retirement. In retirement, he worked for Papich-Kuba Funeral Service for over 12 years.
Norm was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was treasurer of Teamsters Union Local 238 for many years, member of Teamsters Union Local 238 Retirees, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir, treasurer and volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788.
Norm lovingly tended to his parcel of land and enjoyed feeding the ducks, geese, deer and turkeys that wandered into his yard. He loved to go fishing and was very proud of his grandchildren.
Contributions in memory of Norm may be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
