Travagiakis, Sam
Sam Travagiakis, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at Northbrook Manor, Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Edith; daughter, Lisa Kennedy (Christopher) of Marion; son, Michael Travagiakis (Gail) of Oregon; seven grandchildren, AmberLynn, Eric, Amy, Terence, Ryan, Kyle and Michalie; one great-grandchild, Rexton; and sisters, Irene Minor of Cedar Rapids, Victoria Mestas of Cornville, Ariz., and Florence Getlin of Anadarko, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven; sister, Elaine Butters; and brothers, George and Tony.
Sam Travagiakis was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of James and Edna (Hill) Travagiakis. On Jan. 7, 1953, he married Edith Mae Parry. Sam was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, taxidermy, leatherwork, making walking canes and hat racks. Sam was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers No. 373 and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.
