On June 20, 2017, Tom McDonald, 78, passed away peacefully due to complications from Pick's dementia at Solon Retirement Village located in Solon.
Tom was born Jan. 10, 1939, to Freeman and Fern McDonald in Fargo, N.D.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Barb McDonald; his brother, Jerry McDonald (Judi); his sister, Maureen Lawrence; his children, Terry McDonald (Rhonda), Tammy Crist McDonald, Cheryl Maurice, Brian McDonald (Polly) and Mike McDonald (Melanie); along with his stepsons, James Hohn (Melissa) and Joe Hohn (Heather). He had 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Kathy Zimmerman (John), Mary Romanchak and Peggy Weaver (Dave).
Tom was an avid golfer, and when he retired, he spent quite a bit of time enjoying golf with beloved friends and neighbors before the effects of his dementia made it a challenge for him to continue.
Tom graduated from Shanley High School in Fargo in 1957. He had fond memories of those years and being able to play ball with Roger Maris. He completed his four-year degree at North Dakota State University and went on to obtain his master's degree at Moorhead State. He started his work career at McDonald Livestock and McDonald Meats in Fargo and ended his career working as sales manager for Ecosyl Products (a feed inoculant company from the U.K.).
When Tommy wasn't employed in the ag industry, he taught marketing at Mankato Technical College in Minnesota. Tom also served as a member of the North Dakota state Legislature and as West Fargo, N.D., police commissioner.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held July 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 100 S. Cedar St. in Solon, where there will be a 1 p.m. prayer service.
Tom will be greatly missed by his family.
In lieu of flowers, etc., memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer Association or Iowa City Hospice.
