Tom "Big Dog" John Marbach, 59, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, April 2, 2018, following a prolonged illness. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. John R. Flaherty, with a visitation one hour prior to Mass.
Tom was born Aug. 15, 1958, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Norbert and Rita (Eischeid) Marbach. He attended school at Immaculate Conception, then graduated from Regis High School in 1976. He began a long career as an auto mechanic working for several shops, lastly at Mount Vernon Road Auto Center. On Sept. 26, 1987, he married Janet Anderson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Tom was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a great dancer and enjoyed volleyball, bowling, boating, singing karaoke and shooting fireworks! Tom also loved watching helicopters and airplanes.
Tom will be remembered for his expert auto repair knowledge. He could diagnose car problems over the telephone by just listening to an engine turnover. He was one of the last true "carburetor guys."
Survivors include his wife, Janet; sister, Jane (Gerald) Monserud; nephews and nieces, Nick (Heather), Bryan (Cassie), Scott (Jennifer), Ryan (April), Dani (Donald), Andrew (Kelly) and Megan; several great-nieces and nephews; and stepbrothers and stepsisters, Debbie, Ellen, Steve, Greg and Ann.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an aunt and uncle, whom he lived with and cared for, Chris Marbach and Bill Heins; stepfather, Donald Ung; in-laws, Bill and Dorothy Anderson; infant sister-in-law, Donna Anderson; niece, Elizabeth Begley; stepbrother, Matt Ung; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and their beloved pet, Dusty.
