Tolzmann, James 'Jim' Alfred
James “Jim” Alfred Tolzmann passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. A Celebration of the Resurrection Faith and the life of James Tolzmann will be held at 1 p.m. March 2 at Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Pries officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church Music Ministry.
Jim was born May 1, 1927, in New Salem, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army. After earning his undergraduate degree at St. Olaf College, Jim met Peg (Bunton) while completing his Ph.D. in chemistry at Indiana University. They resided in North St. Paul, Minn., and Austin, Texas before moving to Iowa City in 2005. Jim worked at 3M Co. for more than 30 years and served as a board member for Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul.
Jim and Peg shared many adventures traveling, golfing, and enjoying grandchildren's activities. Jim was an avid blood donor, enjoyed singing in church choirs, and was a dedicated member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in North St. Paul, Minn., Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas and Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret “Peg”; their children, Paul (Janet) Tolzmann of Golden Valley, Minn., Anne (Keith) Obermeyer of Medina, Minn., Jean (Rick) Dobyns of Iowa City and Mary (Brian) Weeks of Prairie du Sac, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and his brother, Charles (Helen) Tolzmann of Sun City West, Ariz.
