Todd A. Shumaker, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away suddenly January 20, 2026, at age 61, due to cancer. Todd was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, September 8, 1964, the fourth child of James B. and Jo Ann Shumaker (Berkshire). He attended Cedar Rapids Washington High School, graduating in 1982.
Following high school, he attended the University of Iowa and University of North Texas, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design in 1988. His career first took him to Kansas City and eventually led him to Orange County, CA. He held senior designer roles at several high-profile interior architecture firms, beginning with HOK, then MVE Interiors, and ultimately at H. Hendy Associates in Newport Beach, CA, where he spent nineteen years before retiring in August 2025. Todd worked on many prominent projects during his career, some of which include the Federal Reserve Building in Kansas City, Fed Ex Forum in Memphis and headquarters for Kawasaki USA, Monster Energy Drinks, Easter Seals, Pacific Life and Mercedes Benz Classic Car Center. Todd was highly respected in his field, and he earned numerous design awards, including a Remy Award, several IIDA-Calibre Awards and recognition by NAIOP.
In 1994, Todd met Thomas J. Hollingsworth and together, built a wonderful life at their home in Aliso Viejo, CA. The pair spent their vacation time travelling the world and visiting friends and family in California, Iowa and Utah. Tom and Todd were inseparable life partners and Tom was with him to the end.
Todd is survived by, and will be missed, by his partner, Tom, brothers Aaron (Sarah) Shumaker and Brian (Danise) Shumaker, his parents James and Jo Ann Shumaker and four nieces and nephews. Todd will also be missed by Tom’s family who considered him an irreplaceable part of their lives.
In accordance with Todd’s wishes, his ashes will be scattered at the beaches of Laguna and Newport, two places he loved dearly. There will be no service, but a celebration of Todd’s life will be held at a later date.
