Tipton, F. Wayne
F. Wayne Tipton, 82, of Marion, died Monday, March 1, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m., Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, by the Rev. Becky High, with military honors. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Private Family Inurnment: Oak Shade Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; three sons, Gary (Laurie) Tipton of Cedar Rapids, Jeff (Peggy) Tipton of Marion, and Tim (April Channell) Tipton of Shellsburg; seven grandchildren, David (Kim), Julie, Jeremy, Jessica, Melissa, Mallory and Dustin; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl; and a son, Terry, who died in 1993.
Wayne was born Feb. 22, 1928, the son of Ralph and Grace (Gaines) Tipton, in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Walker High School in 1946. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He married Dorothy Gearhart on Oct. 4, 1952, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Wayne was a truck driver with the Teamsters union in the Cedar Rapids area for many years, and then worked for Armstrong's Department Store in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the American Legion Post #298 in Marion and a member of the Teamsters union Local #238. Wayne was an avid reader and woodworker, loved the outdoors, was a passionate Cubs fan and loved family get-togethers.
A memorial fund has been established in Wayne's memory.
