Thurber, Robert S.
Robert S. Thurber, 75, of Tipton, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, in Cedar Manor Nursing Home. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Tipton Masonic Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Tipton Veterans of Foreign War and Tipton American Legion.

Robert was born Nov. 8, 1933, in Hornell, N.Y., to Stanley R. and Alice Thurber. He graduated from the Hornell High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country from 1953-1956 during the Korean War. He worked in refrigeration and as electrician for Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y., and later worked as an electrician for Morrison-Knudson in Hornell, N.Y. Robert was married to Patricia Ann Plank, and after her death, he married Betty Johnson.
Robert is survived by his son, Robert (Jennifer) Thurber of Greenwood, N.Y.; daughter, Rosalie (Mark) Roy of Newport, N.C.; stepchildren, Rita (Dick) Howard of Muscatine, Lisa (Richard) Meiers of Tipton, Michelle (Quenton) Jacoby of Tipton, and Randall, Russell (Cindy) Phelps and Roger (Tami) Phelps, all of Iowa City; brothers, Bob (Darlene) Lathrop of Wilmington, Del., and Norman Carpenter of Warsaw, N.Y.; stepbrothers, Donnie (Linda) Salyars, Lowell (Donna) Salyars, Robert Salyars and Garey Salyars; stepsister, Rosa Bowdish; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
