Thorne, Helen Louise
Helen Louise Thorne, 71, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii, following a 2-year battle with cancer. Celebration of Life services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, with the Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, Jan. 28, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m.
Helen is survived by her husband, John Thorne of Washington; daughter, Mary Mendelin and husband Michael of Bettendorf; daughter, Sandra Abbott and husband Kevin of Urbandale; five grandchildren, John and Leah Mendelin of Bettendorf, and Elizabeth, Audrey and Olivia Abbott of Urbandale; brother, Richard Gilbert and Julie Gammack of Gulfport, Fla.; brother, Jerry Gilbert and wife Cherie of Bloomfield; and brother, Fred Gilbert and wife Carol of Ottumwa.
Memorials have been established for hospice, the Washington Community Theater, Washington Community Y, or to United Presbyterian Church Youth Programs.
