Thompson, Charles E.
Charles E. Thompson, 86, born on Nov. 11, 1924, on the family farm near Hurley, S.D. to Jens and Anna Thompson. Charles lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, surrounded by his family and his niece, Gayle Jorgenson.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois; his daughters, Teresa (Lawrence) Bartlett, Tracy (Gary) Cole and Kitsy (Michael) McLaud; son, Chip (Judy) Thompson; his brother, Richard (Cathy) Thompson; nine grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Audrey and Dorothy; and his brother, Ray.
He farmed for five years, worked for the Co-op in South Dakota, and began working for Ozark Airlines in Cedar Rapids in 1957; he retired in 1984. He was a proud Marine veteran of World War II. During his time in the service, he survived the Battle of Iwo Jima, received the Purple Heart, as well as other various commendations, and was the boxing champion of the entire fifth fleet. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and doing good works with his friends, Al and Bob.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Hospice of Mercy for their expertise and support.
A celebration of Charles' life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at the Cedar Boat Club at Mohawk Park.
Arrangements entrusted to Iowa Cremation.
