Thomas "Tom" J. Woods, 89, of Oelwein, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a Scripture service at 6 p.m. at Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein.
A memorial fund has been established
to go to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
Tom was born Nov. 20, 1928, in rural Ryan, Iowa, the son of John and Sadie (Burke) Woods. He graduated from Randalia High School in 1946. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Doran on May 21, 1955, in Fayette, Iowa. Tom co-owned and operated Woods Brothers Wholesale Co. with his brothers. He also farmed, raising cattle and grain. Tom enjoyed his farming and his John Deere equipment; also his time on the Mississippi River and winters in Naples, Fla. He was a people person and lived life to the fullest, but his greatest enjoyment was his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.
Tom is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Oelwein; his daughters, Janna (Jack) Woods Hamilton of Houston, Texas, Jody Woods Thompson of Delray Beach, Fla., and and Jill Woods Kelly of Oelwein; grandchildren, Courtney Woods, Rachel Woods, Alison Kelly, Elizabeth Thompson, Thomas Kelly and Olivia Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Brady, Drakesyn and Christian; a brother, Jim Woods of Cedar Rapids; a brother-in law, Sheldon Fox; a sister-in-law, Judy Woods; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tommy Woods; sister, Margaret, and her husband, Tom Henry; brother, Don, and his wife, Lola Woods; sister, Betty Fox; brother, Paul, and his wife, Carolee Woods; and brother, Leo Woods.
