Thomas "Tom" G. Vasos, 94, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at the Hiawatha Care Center. A private family service will be Saturday, Jan. 16, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Ann (Larry) Morris and Barb (Dick) Knockel, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren,
Stephanie (Andrew) Kathmann, Ryan (Alicia) Morris, Laura Knockel, Leslie (Tom) Lewis and Lynnsey Knockel; five great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Robert (Alice) Easterday of Fort Lupton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents, Gust and Minnie (Pugh) Vasos; brothers, Joseph Jackson, Charles Pugh and John Vasos; and sisters, Alain Maxwell and Myrtle Rhode.
Tom was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Miami, Iowa. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard motor torpedo boats in the South Pacific. Thomas married Jean Easterday on June 9, 1945, in Newport, R.I.
He was a member of the VFW and retired from Cherry-Burrell in 1983.
Tom and Jean were active in the Merrimix Formal Dance Club. He was a master gardener who specialized in beautiful orchids. His greatest enjoyment came from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorials will be donated to the World War II PT Boat Museum.
