Thomas 'Tommy' Mims

On Saturday, May 1, 2021, Thomas "Tommy" Mims, 87, passed away peacefully after a brief illness.
Tommy is survived by stepsibling, William "Billy" Elam Sr. of Cedar Rapids; one niece, Elaine Elam,
Tempe, Ariz.; and a nephew, William Elam Jr., Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his birth mother, Bonnie Taylor; father, Edward A. Mims; and stepmother, Captolar B. Mims.
Tommy went to school at McKinley High in Cedar Rapids. He enlisted in the Army in 1954 and retired a sergeant after 13 years of honorable service. He had a passion for softball and is listed on the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame. Later in life, he enjoyed coffee with his friends at the Olive Tree, attending family nights at the Community of Artists and Veterans (C.A.V.) and going to the casino. Tommy was an accomplished leather worker. With the help of the C.A.V. Tommy won third place in the National Veterans Creative Arts Competition in 2019.
Burial will be at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Tommy's honor to the C.A.V., Veterans Memorial Building, 50 Second Ave. Bridge, 5th floor, Cedar Rapids.
