Thomas “Tom” Raymond Spratt, 82, of Marion, Iowa, lost his courageous battle with esophageal cancer on July 7th, 2025, with his sister, Allison, by his side. The family will greet friends from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with full military honors provided by U.S. Navy Honors Detail and Marion American Legion Post #298.
Tom was born August 21st, 1942, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, to Raymond and Ida (Organ) Spratt. He was a proud member of the Marion High School class of 1960, a fan of the Marion Indians his entire life. He then continued with his education, graduating from the University of Iowa in 1965, with a business/marketing degree. He continued to cheer on his beloved Hawkeyes and enjoyed listening to the games with friends and family. After college he served 3 tours in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and learned how to pilot small aircraft. He was very proud of his military service and enjoyed his membership in the American Legion.
After the Navy he moved to Tucson, Arizona, and worked for Union Oil. Later he relocated to San Diego and worked for Mobil Oil for many years, before retiring in 2011. Ever the dutiful son he then moved back to Iowa to care for his mother, until her demise at 102 years. Besides the American Legion, Tom was also a member of St. Joseph Church. Up until his recent diagnosis, he enjoyed good health and diligently rode his bicycle 10 or more miles every day, even into his 80's.
He is survived by his sister, Allison Harkness (Kevin Kuch) of Central City, Iowa; nephew, Kyle Harkness (Cristeen Feild); and niece, Megan Harkness, all of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Linda.
A special thank-you to The Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, Dr Wood and his team, and the wonderful staff of the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Iowa, where he drew his final breath.
