Thomas E. "Tom" Harris, 80, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Sunday, June 26, 2016, at the Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, followed by burial at the North Scott Cemetery (Brick Chapel). Visitation will be after 9:30 am Wednesday until services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Tom's memory to Fraternal Order of the Eagles or Diabetes Research Center. Online condolences may be sent through the funeral home website at www.gayandciha.com.
Thomas Eugene Harris was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Parnell, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (VanDee) Harris. During the mid-1950s he served in the U.S. Army. On Dec. 1, 1962, he married Mary Ann Douglass. For a number of years he worked as a mechanic for Harris Truck Repair, and later he owned and operated Harris Discount Store for many years. He was a member of the VFW, IOOF, Eagles and the Moose Lodge. For many years, he enjoyed racing his own cars and later in life still enjoyed following racing, especially anything NASCAR.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; his parents; a sister, Lucille Walters; and a brother, Jack Harris.
He will be missed by his friends.
