Thomas J. Stackhouse, 86, of Swisher, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at his home. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. The Rev. Tim Sheedy will officiate. Burial with military rites:
2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where there will be a prayer service at 5 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Shelley; two daughters, Suzanne (Jason) Dumont of Iowa City and Lisa (Mark) Roussell of Cedar Falls; three sisters, Mary Louise Smith of Denver, Colo., Mercedes Anne Signor of West Des Moines and Jean Marie (Jim) Petted of Coto De Caza, Calif.; and a brother, R. Scott (Patti) Davies of Minneapolis, Minn. He also is survived by seven grandchildren, Shelby, Greyson, Hayden and Gentry Dumont and Joe, Ben and Kate Roussell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; stepmother, Maude Stackhouse; and a brother, John Richard Stackhouse.
Tom was born March 4, 1931, in Davenport, the son of Raymond and Mary Gertrude Murphy Stackhouse. He attended St. Ambrose Academy and graduated from Holy Family High School in Mason City in 1949. Tom went to college in Mason City for one year before joining the Air Force during the Korean War and served from 1951 to 1954.
After being discharged from the military, he graduated from Parks College of St. Louis University in 1958. He later joined the Army and served in Vietnam with the 1st Calvary Division.
Tom married Marilyn Guinn on Dec. 12, 1970, in Marion. Marilyn passed away in 1998. He then married Shelley L. Kelley on July 29, 2008, in Fairfax. Tom was an independent insurance agent for Farmers Insurance from 1973 until the present. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon and the VFW and was an avid private pilot for many years.
Tom was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial fund has been established.
