Thomas J. Schueller, MD, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at his home after a very brief illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, at St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home with a 2:30 p.m. vigil service. Friends may visit again from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the church.
Tom is survived by his two sons, Matt (Teppie) of Green Bay, Wis., and Scott (Petra) of Munich, Germany; and his daughter, Meg (George) May of Woodbury, Minn.; grandchildren, Mark, Tony and Michael May, Blaise and Eleanor Noble-Schueller and Anna and Clare Schueller; sister, Mary Ann (Paul) Sands; sisters-in-law, Nancy Schueller, Carolyn Bileddo and Liz Tanaka; and brothers-in-law, Tom (Barb) McNeil, Tim (Deann) McNeil, Mike (Bobbi) McNeil and Joe (Maria) McNeil.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Veronica Schueller; son, Mark Schueller; wife, Mary Ann Schueller; and brothers, Dave Schueller and Father Vern Schueller.
Tom was the first born son of Leo and Veronica Schueller (nee Lolwing). He attended Holy Ghost Catholic Grade School. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1953. Tom graduated from Loras College in 1957 and graduated from The University of Iowa
College of Medicine in 1960. He spent two years in the Air Force in Glasgow, Mont. In 1963, Tom returned to Cedar Rapids to practice medicine with Dr. William Hayes.
Along with Dr. James Stiles and Dr. William Finn, Tom formed Family Physicians of Cedar Rapids, where he treated patients for 38 years. During this time he was a member of the Linn County Medical Society, a member of Mercy Medical Center staff and St. Luke's Hospital staff. Tom was a past president of the Linn County Medical Society and he was a longtime president of the scholarship committee of the Linn County Medical
Society.
In December 1999, he retired from Family Physicians. For many years, he and Mary Ann enjoyed their winters in Arizona and their summers in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, spending time with his wife, Mary Ann, his children and grandchildren, working at the Community Health Free Clinic, watching the Cubs, his annual vacation to the lake and having a martini at 5 p.m.
Tom will be remembered for being a wonderful and dedicated physician. He took such good care of people. The Catholic faith that was imparted to him by his parents ran deep all of his life. He will be remembered for being a vivid storyteller and someone who always enjoyed a good joke. He had an uncanny ability to travel to a destination taking the back roads and never hitting a stoplight if possible, even if that required 47 extra turns.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to St. Pius X Church or the Community Free Health Clinic of
