Thomas P. "Tommy" Schaffnit, 60, of Iowa City, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Thomas Paul Schaffnit was born Oct. 20, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Paul and Barbara Schaffnit. He attended schools in Waterloo, graduating from Waterloo West High School in 1971. He enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving as an airborne ranger. For many years, he worked for John Deery Motors in Cedar Falls. Upon moving to Iowa City, he worked for Community Motors, Carousel Motors and later the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Environmental Services as a custodian, before a disability forced him to retire.
His family includes his partner, J. Scott Beard of Iowa City; his mother, Barbara Schaffnit of Waterloo; brothers, Craig (Bobbi) Schaffnit of Waterloo and Kerry Schaffnit of Waterloo; a sister, Lynne Brayton (Jim) of Evansdale; and two nieces, Jamie and Alex Brayton.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul.
As per Thomas' request, no formal services are planned, but a gathering of family and friends will take place beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday going until the last story is shared that evening at the American Legion, 3016 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, a
memorial fund has been
established in Tommy's memory.
