He graduated from Washington Senior High School where he was an all-state swimmer and an all-city football player. Tom earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winona State University, where he was an all-American swimmer. After teaching in Minnesota, Iowa and Florida, Tom joined the family paving construction company for several years and then eventually owned a landscaping business.
