Thomas, Orville L.
Orville L. Thomas, 91, of the Hiawatha Care Center, died there on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, after an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday. Burial, with military rites: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Ethel (Russell) Wiebold of Westminster, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Onalee Arnold of Marion; sisters-in-law, Alice Arnold of Dubuque, Esther Thomas of Anamosa and Dee Thomas of Acton, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris; four brothers and four sisters.
Orville was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Iowa County, the son of Hugh and Iva Ochs Thomas. He served his country in World War II as a Machinists Mate First Class, U.S. Navy. Orville was united in marriage to Doris E. Arnold on Aug. 15, 1953, in Central City. He was the owner of Orv's Brake and Alignment in Cedar Rapids for nearly 40 years. Following retirement, he worked as a groundskeeper at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery.
Orville was a member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed playing bridge, music, pitching horseshoes and making ice cream with family and friends.
Memorial donations may be given to Echo Hill Presbyterian Church in Orville's name.
