THOMAS MAYHEW
Cedar Rapids
Thomas Gilbert Mayhew, 76, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at home. Memorial services: 1 to 4 p.m. March 14, CSPS Hall, 1103 Third St. SE.
Survivors include his sons, Kirk (Christine) of
Bellevue, Ky., and Mark (Kelly) of Des Moines; and two grandchildren, Kirah and Ethan of Des Moines. Thomas also is survived by Helga C.W. Mayhew of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Patricia A. Mayhew of Auburn, Ind.; niece, Cindy (Tom) Egrek of Newbury, Ohio; and nephew, Patrick Gorsuch of Martinsville, Ind.
Thomas was born June 24, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Thomas Gilbert and Margaret (Berger) Coil. He entered the Navy in 1959, was honorably discharged in 1965, and graduated from Ohio State University in 1973, with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
Thomas began his career with Rockwell Collins in 1973, retiring as a senior systems engineer after 28 years of service.
Thomas was a loving father to his twin sons, who fondly remember riding roller coasters, hiking and skipping rocks while drinking root beer in the park with their dad.
An avid reader with a curious mind, Thomas believed in truth, freedom and American values. After retiring, Thomas generously volunteered his time assisting with raku firings at local schools for The Ceramics Center, judging local science fairs and as a course monitor of annual races.
He will be missed by his family and the community.
