Thomas G. Van Woert Sr., 97, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at Winslow House Care Center. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow the service
at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Thomas was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Canistota, S.D., the son of Guy and Clara (Schlueter) Van Woert. He served in the
U.S. Army in 1946 with the occupation forces in Japan. Thomas married Margaret Sommer on April 26, 1952, in Cedar Rapids. He worked at the Wilson meatpacking plant, retiring in the summer of 1984.
Survivors include his children, Chris Rossow, Carol Van Woert, both of Cedar Rapids, Cathy (Gary) Berggren of Marion, Connie Van Woert of Hiawatha, Iowa, Thomas Van Woert Jr. of Cedar Rapids and Nancy Powell-Bodeen (Johnny Bodeen) of Hiawatha; seven grandchildren, Chad (Cassandra) Rossow, Travis Van Woert, John Berggren, Scott (Elisabeth) Berggren, Corinne (Brandon) Krutzfield, Clara Hoff and Mike Powell; and great-grandchildren, Owen and Josie Berggren and Lucy Krutzfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Clara Van Woert; wife, Margaret, in 2017; grandson, Brian Beltz; great-grandson, Berggren; and brother, Donald Van Woert.
Memorials may be directed to the Winslow House Care Center in Marion.
