Theis, Hazel Marie
Hazel Marie Theis, 105, of Lansing, Iowa, formerly of Waukon and Harpers Ferry, Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa.
Hazel Marie, the daughter of John and Mathilda (Johanns) Marr, was born July 30, 1908, on the Marr Homestead, rural Riceville, Iowa. She attended Afton #1 Country School in Howard County, Iowa. Hazel was united in marriage with Harry Theis on May 31, 1927, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. Harry preceded her in death on May 16, 1997. Hazel raised her children and helped Harry in the family business, Harry Theis and Sons Clothing in Waukon, Iowa. Harry and Hazel moved to Lansing after their retirement.
Hazel was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. She was a former member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and St Ann- St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Hazel was the first resident of Thornton Heights Assisted Living Center in Lansing.
Hazel is survived by her four children, John (Jan) Theis of Macomb, James (Becky) Theis of Clinton, Mo., Thomas (Virginia) Theis of Hiawatha and Linda (Michael) Manning of Lansing; one daughter-in-law, Karin Theis Manning of Onalaska, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; one son, Dale Theis; one daughter-in-law, Myrtle Ahlstrom Theis; her parents; and seven siblings, Bessie, Grace, Paul, Avery, Ralph, Cyrus and Leslie.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Thornton Heights and Thornton Manor for the tremendous care and support during Hazel's residency.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. The Rev. John Moser and the Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg will be the concelebrants.
Visitation will held from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Lansing. There will be a 4 p.m. rosary service and an 8:30 p.m. Scripture service held at the funeral home Tuesday. Friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Interment will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Waukon. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Lansing, Iowa, is assisting the family.
