The Rev. Ruth Hograbe
THE REV. RUTH HOGRABE
Minneapolis, Minn.
Ruth Hograbe always had the courage to find her true path. For the last 25 years, that path took Ruth all across Minnesota sharing hope, faith, love and light.
On Dec. 9, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Harry and Gladys Hograbe were blessed with a second daughter, Ruth Ann. True to her upbringing, Ruth worked hard and excelled. She earned degrees from the University of Iowa, Iowa State and the University of Minnesota in pursuit of a promising career in public health. What she imagined was coming true in her work with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. While Ruth was in Minneapolis to complete a master's in public health, she was drawn to the Walker Community Church. There she felt a calling to serve as a United Methodist pastor. Ruth's courage allowed her to divert from her public health career to follow her true path of Gospel ministry.
After completing her Master of Divinity at Boston University in 1993, Ruth was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church. Ruth went on to serve churches in Bemidji, Cass Lake, Minneapolis, Beardsley, Browns Valley, Aitkin, Pine Lake, Columbia Heights, Annandale and South Haven. Ruth's path, however, still was not complete.
While serving in Beardsley, Minn., in 2000, Ruth met the love of her life, Duane Lookingbill, who at the time was a pastor at a church in neighboring Ortonville. Ruth and Duane married in 2002 back at Walker Church. They shared a full and beautiful life until Ruth's untimely death on Aug. 17, 2018.
Ruth is survived by husband, Duane; older sister, Linda (Paul Hardenberg) Osburn; and godchildren, Daniel and Sharupa Buckley-Kranz.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Walker Community United Methodist Church, 3104 16th Ave. S, Minneapolis, Minn. Memorials preferred to Walker Church. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at a later date.
